Maia Wikler is a Ph.D. candidate in political ecology, a writer, and a filmmaker, based on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. A recipient of the Lorene Kennedy Environmental Scholarship, her research focuses on memory as a tool of resistance in the face of corporate abuse, specifically deforestation. Her reporting appears in Teen Vogue, VICE, Vogue, High Country News, and Canada’s National Observer, among many others. She was awarded the CC Faces of Innovation for her work at the UN Climate Talks in Germany. As a member of The North Face Explorers Arctic Expedition, Wikler reported on the unfolding climate crisis for Teen Vogue. Her reporting was presented to congressional leaders on Capitol Hill. She furthered her advocacy efforts for the Arctic Refuge as the director, writer, and producer of the documentary film, "Walking Two Worlds," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. As a National Geographic Explorer, her work documented cross-border salmon stories and the threats to wild salmon from mining in Northern British Columbia. Wikler was recently selected as a filmmaker-in-residence at the Woodstock Film Festival, where she worked on her documentary short, "Wild East," set to premiere in the winter of 2026.
